my opinion, however, is that the writer is using the word "californication"
to refer to the impure, self-indulgent, materialistic lifestyles that we
live that are represented by America and "California". The song however
seems to force the listener to some sort of empathy because the writer seems
to blame all the evils of our present age upon this "californication" and,
it must be admitted, there are few people who would not have some personal
misgivings about som aspect of our "age".

Califorication speaks of the way in which American society is acting as a corrupting influence on the rest of the world.
It also speaks of the ease with which modern socity can be influenced, and controlled, by select groups of people, for something as simple as acceptance from the wider community.
Californication challenges the way that western societies function, showing that we live in a materialistic, shallow world where something like plastic surgery is considered a normal way for people to gain the acceptance their society has taught them to crave.

I like this song, and im not going to get all "literatury". i think its just trying to make a statement about how, as maddy said, the western civilistation is very materialistic. Like in the line "pay your Surgeon very well to break the spell of aging". Once upon a time there was nothing wrong with getting old, now that "calafornication" has come along, everyone feels that they have to be young forever to be loved or admired. Also that everything produced by the west is kinda fake, eg "space may be the final frontier but its made in a hollywood basement". The sad thing is its true, "little girls" dream of fame, i know i did (still do :P), and to get their "dream" they exploit themselves with their body, "teenage bride with a baby inside", "hard core soft porn", and then when their old they get thrown out of things. And then its emphasised that it can't be gotten rid of, this "all for me" attitude is kinda of embedded in our society, as "tidal waves couldn't save the world from californication".
But any way thats just my kinda morbid take on this song.
